2020-Present

June 2020: Amro Mohammad published his manuscript, Elevated V-ATPase activity following PTEN loss is required for enhanced oncogenic signaling in breast cancer, in Molecular Cancer Research. Amro's manuscript explores the role that PTEN plays in breast cancer cells. We showed that PTEN controls PRR expression and V-ATPase function in breast cancer cells for the first time. Also in this publication, we show that PRR regulates HER2 expression and cellular localization. Link to the publication can be found here.

June 2020: Cynthia Feng presented on her project in a Virtual Session on replication and gene expression for the American Society for Virology Annual Meeting (held over Zoom as the conference in Fort Collins was cancelled due to COVID-19). She initially received (but did not end up using due to the cancelled travel costs) the Department of Biochemistry's Graduate Research Enhancement and Travel Award. Link to the conference presentations here or here.

April 2020: The review article written by Cynthia Feng (M.Sc. student) with Yingke Liang (undergraduate student) titled "The role of apoptin in chicken anemia virus replication" was recently accepted and published in Pathogens. Link to the article here.

2019

September 2019: Serena Nath has received the CGS-M for the 2019-2020 year. Congratulations Serena!

August 2019: Yilin Wang was awarded the Mitacs Globalink Graduate Fellowship (2019-2020) & the Doctoral Research Scholarship from FRQNT (2019-2022). Congratulations Yilin!

August 2019: Amro Mohammad published his manuscript, V-ATPase-associated Prorenin Receptor is upregulated in prostate cancer after PTEN loss, in OncoTarget. This is the first time the role of the Prorenin Receptor is studied in prostate cancer cells. We showed that PRR expression levels can be indicative of hyperactive oncogenic signaling and that the secreted form of PRR is elevated in the urine of patients with aggressive prostate cancer. Link to the publication can be found here.

July 2019: Cynthia Feng presented at American Society for Virology Annual Meeting at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. Her talk was titled "Mitotic arrest during Gyrovirus infection is essential for viral replication and gene expression". She received the Canderel Travel Award from the GCRC to attend. Link to the presentation here.

July 2019: Aisha Gerrior traveled to Italy to speak at the DNA Tumor Virus Meeting.

Congrats to Alisha Gerrior for receiving the J.P. Collip Fellowship!

2018

August 2018: Lab Thomson House lunch!

June 2018: Owen Chen recently spoke at the Cell Cycle Meeting at the Salk Institute.

May 2018: Members of our lab participated either as runners or volunteers in the Defi Canderel.

March 2018: Owen Chen recently gave a GCRC Spotlight presentation.

February 2018: Congrats to Alisha Gerrior for receiving the GCRC Entry Scholarship. We're very excited to have you in the lab, Alisha!

2017

April 2017: Congratulations to Owen Chen for receiving the Canada Graduate Scholarship – Master’s (CGS-M).

2016

July 2016: Congrats to Owen Chen for receiving the McGill Integrated Cancer Research Training Program (MICRTP) Graduate Scholarship! Owen was an undergraduate in the lab, and has now continued for his M.Sc. Biochemistry.

Amro Mohammad was selected for an oral presentation titled: "Prorenin Receptor is cleaved by PACE4 in prostate cancer cells" in New London/New Hampshire at the Protein Processing Trafficking and Secretion Gordon Research Seminar. Amro presented his work in collaboration with Dr. Robert Day's laboratory in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

2015

Amro Mohammad received the CIHR poster golden award and was nominated to attend the Lindau Noble Laureate Meeting in Germany for his poster presentation titled: "Assessment of the Soluble (Pro)renin Receptor as a Prostate Cancer Biomarker" at the Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF) in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

2014 & Earlier

2014: Amro Mohammad was awarded the Vanier-Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS). In 2014, Vanier-CGS was awarded to 55 students and the competition is open to both Canadian and international students in their first or second year of Doctoral studies.

2013: Amro Mohammad was awarded the McGill Integrated Cancer Research Training Program (MICRTP) offered by the Goodman Cancer Centre to help fund his year-old doctoral studies.
